Carl Samson: Herman Wessel Murals Lecture

Hello! We are very to announce that the next lecture in our series will be about the Herman Wessel murals on Saturday, February 15, 2025 @ 11AM in the community room. (No signup is required for this lecture).

Herman Wessel (1878-1969) was one of the last great practitioners of the fine art of mural painting as it was known through the 19th and early 20th century. Trained under Frank Duveneck and in Paris at the Colarossi and Julian Academies, he arrived back in Cincinnati as a master of the  human figure, anatomy and gesture. As his career progressed through the 1920s and 30s, he moved up the ranks of mural painting’s last and most prominent exponents. Painter Carl Samson (who with wife, art historian Carol Cyran) owns and uses the historic Herman and Bessie Wessel home and studio near Eden Park, will discuss where Wessel’s murals at the Belvedere fit into his ouevre, and what considerations went into its design, planning and execution.
